If anyone would like to ever get in a fist fight with me I can give you one sure-fire way to make it happen. Tell me that American Gangster is a bad album. I can't promise I'll win the physical fight, but you'll be hurting. Hospital hurting.

With that said, there is no way Blueprint 3 is going to disappoint me. And it's pretty easy to lose my vote when it comes to hip-hop. "D.O.A" is a great song, although it took some time for me to get accustomed to it. "Run This Town" is obviously an instant hit because Rihanna can do no wrong and even with Kayne's shitty shitty shitty verse it still has pop appeal.

I won't know for sure whether this album is great or not until I hear the whole thing in high quality, but on paper (Drake, Kid Cudi, Justice samples, Pharrel etc.), it's kind of blowing me away.

Aww, Eric Hutchinson. He's so adorable and unassuming. This guy's actually been at it for a while now and it's only recently that he's gotten the credit that he deserves. Sounds Like This is Hutchinson's 3rd album and has been doing pretty well on the charts. Pretty well for bouncy, happy, folky, poppy, rock.

Grizzly Bear

I am a fan. Grizzly Bear is friendly Indie-Rock with some of the cleanest, purist vocals I've heard in a while (reminiscent of old-school INXS [which I'm a sucker for]). Their third studio album, Veckatimest is out next week and it's already received crazy-good reviews.

Mandy Moore

I'm not going to bullshit you. When I think of Mandy Moore I start singing the song "Candy" from 1999 (which has been stuck in my head for the past 4 days, ever since I saw she was performing on Leno this week). Her new album, Amanda Leigh, is out next week and judging by the title she's really grown up... or something. I'm sure her sound has matured since her "Candy" days but I really haven't heard anything from her since then. So if you're curious... check her out tonight.

The Airborne Toxic Event

This band/album was my spot this winter! "Sometime Around Midnight" was on absolutely every playlist I created. I'll definitely be checking this performance out although I'm not a fan of the Last Call with Carson Daly stage... way to big and flashy for my taste. I'm thinking they'll play "Happiness is Overrated" but I've been wrong in the past. ATE is an awesome live band and worth checking out.

Iron & Wine aka Samuel Beam is probably some of my favorite folky rock music this side of the Mississippi. Most know him best for his deconstructed version of Postal Service's "Such Great Heights" but he's sitting pretty on about five albums and few more EPs. Around the Well was released today which is an entire 2-disc album of "b-sides and rarities." Expect to hear one of those ditties tonight.

Keane

Meh. Keane. They released their 3rd album last year and just finished up a tour in March. I have no idea what they're doing on Carson and I don't really care. Don't get me wrong, "Somewhere Only We Know" is and always will be my jam, but I can only stand so much banging on a piano. But regardless, check 'em out if you care more than I do. Don't say I never did anything nice for you, Keane.

Need I say more? They're back together. Period. It's going to be amazing. Period.
They're also going to be on tour with Fall Out Boy and Weezer (who knows who'll be tacked on as supporting acts...). These boys know how to produce an effective comeback.

White Rabbits

Indie band, indie name. Pretty typical American Indie dance-rock. They'll remind of you The Walkmen and possible Franz Ferdinand. The band's sophomore album is out tomorrow (It's Frightening) and this will be they're second appearance on Letterman. White Rabbits is an extremely solid live band so check out this performance if you like their sound.

Method Man & Redman

I think they should just collectively change they're name to Joined-at-the-Hip. They act together, they rap together, they probably share the same wife. Honestly, I'm not interested enough to research what they're promoting tonight but I'm guessing it's either 2 things. They've got an album coming out or High How 2 is in post-production.

Okay, I gave in. The two of them are releasing their second collaborative album Blackout! 2. You gotta give me credit. My guesses were eerily close.

Chester French on Jimmy Fallon

I'm absolutely puzzled. As if I weren't distracted enough trying to do my homework... Chester French is performing on Jimmy Fallon. My first thought, without looking at my television, is "this song really sucks. I seriously hope this isn't what the kids are into these days." My second thought is "this person cannot sing. At all." And then, I look at the screen.

My best description is this...

A group of college kids go out to a bar. There is karaoke in the corner. Chester French is a shy red-headed lad who is just psyched to even be invited out with this group of people. Too bad he doesn't drink (with an alcoholic father he feels he needs to commit to sober living) or else he'd be having a better time. Oh wait! Some drunk jock has convinced Chester that all the cool kids get up and do karaoke! With a tamborine in hand young Chessy breaks out of his shell and belts out a hollow dance ballad straight outta 1983.

Don't believe me? It'll be on Hulu in the morning. Make your own judgments.

Thursday and Friday

I'm going to be at a conference all week so I can't really do a real post.

What I can tell you is that Prince will be on Leno tonight and tomorrow. That's all you need to know anyway.

All American Rejects

I'm not going to bullshit anyone right now. I like this band. The song "Gives You Hell" is a hit and I don't care what any of you music snobs say. I'm gonna watch this and it's not just because I enjoy Jimmy Fallon's hosting abilities.

They might be playing "I Wanna" the first song off of When the World Comes Down. It was recently released as the followup single to "Gives You Hell" but honestly it doesn't matter to me. Tyson Ritter is just so dreamy.

Ra Ra Riot

You want to see a good live show? Check out Ra Ra Riot. They haven't been around for too long but they've found their place in the college music world. It's pretty much basic indie tracks and vocals with the addition of lovely ladies playing violin and cello. I have not one clue on what they're going to play. Let's see if Craig Ferguson can stop talking about himself for long enough so they can actually go on.

Prince

Yes. Prince and Leno together again at last. If you don't already know, Prince has been slowly releasing tracks online since the start of this year. It was all leading up to the release of LOtUSFLOW3R (yes, with a 3) his 25th studio album. But wait! You want more Prince!? Don't you worry. He's going to release a 2nd album called MPLSoUND. As if that weren't enough he's planning to be on Leno for 3 nights in a row to promote this explosion of releases. 

I don't recommend watching every night. I actually advise against it. Please don't get me wrong, Prince is an incredible musician, but I can only take so much in-your-face promotion.

British Invasion Part Deux 3/24/09

The lineups are pretty dismal tonight. This is the only one I'm interested in. You should be too.

White Lies
11:30pm on Letterman (CBS)
This band is definitely a throwback to all those who came before them. If you haven't heard them before I suggest you check them out at least once. Their sound is familiar without being too cliche. I'm curious to see what their live show is like. I'm thinking they'll play "Farewell to the Fairground" which is only a safe bet because it's their latest single as of today. It's kind of dancey, kind of rocky, kind of... meh. I'm going to end by saying White Lies is definitely listenable, if not reminiscent of... a lot of established British bands.

These guys recently played the House of Blues in Boston and I heard the show was incredible. They'll probably be playing something from their 3rd album Intimacy which was released in 2008. This album has definitely not yet seen the success of A Weekend in the City, their 2nd album that did better in both the US and their native UK on the charts. I'm going to predict that they'll play "One Month Off" (my favorite from the album and my pick to help launch this album into better sales). Speaking of which check out the video to this song, it's... interesting. While you're at it look up some of the remixes, there are some decent ones out there.

I'm a slacker. 3/18 TASTY THINGS TO WATCH ON LATE NIGHT!!

Okay. I'll admit. I'm kind of late. Please feel free to blame me if you missed something on late night in the past month. I'm actually going to start doing this dance now. Maybe I'm saying this because I'm on spring break and have nothing else to do. Maybe I'm being genuine. It's hard to tell.

The times I'm posting are the start times of the shows. I have absolutely no idea when the bands will play. You can't expect me to do all the work.

Modest Mouse

Definitely worth watching if you ask me. They're releasing an EP of b-sides from Good News... and We Were Dead... but it's not expected until late summer. I'm kind of curious as to what they're promoting...

MSTRKRFT
12:05am on Kimmel (ABC)
Now I'm not particularly interested in this one but I hear it's what the kiddies are into these days. Just your basic electro house music. Two dj's join forces to do what they do best. Their second album Fist of God was released earlier today and I'm guessing they'll be playing the single "Bounce" although I could be wrong. The only thing that will make this interesting for me is to see them mix live. Personally, I can only appreciate MSTRKRFT with a drink in my hand and at least 3 strobe lights in the room.

Vampire Weekend

Okay, break out the African drums. Do I even have to pitch this one? Just when I thought Vampire Weekend was on the way down they snag a spot on Fallon. I'm not really surprised because the first few weeks of the show have been all of his favorites. Again, I'm not positive on what they're promoting especially since their first album has been out for a while now but I suppose since MTV milked them dry over the summer it's time for them to break out into something new.


So those are my picks. If these performances suck don't come crying to me.

Maybe I'll write a followup post and review the shows. But seriously. It's me. So don't hold your breath.
